Ground is Broken on Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital & Pearl Tourville Women’s Pavilion

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The construction management team of Robins & Morton, Cumming and Brownstone Construction have broken ground on the new 625,000-square-foot Medical University of South Carolina Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital & Pearl Tourville Women’s Pavilion in Charleston, South Carolina. Robins & Morton, Cumming and Brownstone Construction will provide construction management services and support during the hospital’s $385-million development, which is slated for occupancy during the fourth quarter of 2019.

The Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital & Pearl Tourville Women’s Pavilion will be a high-end facility focused on the advanced and specialized needs of pediatric tertiary and quaternary cases in South Carolina and the Low Country Region.

The facility, which is phase two of the 30-year-old hospital replacement program, will consist of a 10-story bed tower, five-story diagnostic and treatment building and will house approximately 262 patient beds. The Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital & Pearl Tourville Women’s Pavilion will also include a neonatal intensive care unit, a pediatric intensive care unit, a large labor and delivery unit, a special care nursery and specialized children’s emergency services.

The structure itself will comprise a deep concrete pile foundation, pile caps, structural steel and a slab on metal deck designed to meet the region’s seismic zone conditions. The exterior skin will be a mixture of brick, stucco, metal panels, punch windows and a curtainwall designed to meet hurricane force wind requirements.

Perkins+Will is the architect on the project.
